The Hype vs. Reality of Domestic Violence

The never-ending circus of domestic violence "awareness" campaigns. How quaint. How utterly useless. The media is too busy drooling over sensational cases like Jack Shepherd's to bother with the mundane reality of unreported incidents. You know, the ones that don't get clicks or sell papers. Let's take a look at the "efforts" being made to combat domestic violence:
  • Endless social media campaigns that raise awareness, but not actual funds or support
  • Politicians spewing empty promises and meaningless statistics
  • Influencers sharing their "personal stories" of domestic violence, complete with carefully curated hashtags and selfies
  • "Experts" peddling dubious advice and overpriced self-help books
All while the vast majority of victims suffer in silence, ignored by the very system that's supposed to protect them. The justice system is a joke. Perpetrators get slaps on the wrist, while victims are left to pick up the pieces. Don't believe me? Look at the numbers:
  • Only 1 in 5 domestic violence cases are reported to the police
  • Of those, only 1 in 10 result in a conviction
  • The average sentence for domestic violence is a whopping 2.5 years
  • Rehabilitation programs are few and far between, with a success rate that's laughable
But hey, at least we have "awareness" campaigns to make us feel better, right? And then there's the uncomfortable truth that domestic violence is a symptom of a broader societal problem. But who wants to talk about that? It's much easier to scapegoat individual "monsters" like Jack Shepherd and pretend that's the root of the issue. I mean, who needs to address systemic inequality, toxic masculinity, and economic oppression when you can just blame it all on a few "bad apples"? Gullible people will continue to lap up the nonsense peddled by "experts" and influencers, while the real victims suffer in silence. The scam artists will keep on scamming, and the system will continue to fail. But hey, at least we'll all feel good about ourselves, right? Wrong. The only thing we should feel is outrage, and a deep-seated disgust at the utter failure of our society to protect its most vulnerable members. Anything less is just complicity.
